Cracker Platter on a Budget

Cracker Platter on a Budget

The "girl's part" of the bridal shower where this, the ranch dressing and chocolate cake with raspberry glaze was served, was to be followed by a co-ed trip to a local restaurant and bar. So, I chose light snacks (except for the cake) to serve at the shower. The crackers and cheese cubes were a hit and half of the vegetables were gone. Naturally, most of the cake did not come home with me.

The other technologist who was helping me put the shower together is into design and recommended that I purchase cheese cubes instead of slices. Paul, my darling designer-husband, said it would be tacky to make the cheese cubes myself. Well, when I got to the grocery store, there was only one kind of cheese cube! And they had been smashed! Not to mention, they were more expensive and had more additives. I decided Paul and Michelle were going to have to go with what I thought was best all the way around. I bought a block of cheese and got out a really good knife and carefully cut the cheese into as perfectly-cubed shapes as I could. No one at the shower mentioned the fact that some of the cheese looked a little rectangular-ish. But I know they were into my second bowl of cheese cubes before we left. Personally, I took pride in thinking my cubes looked fresh and peppy compared to the ones I could have served.

The entire cheese and cracker plate cost me about $4. The cheese was $2 at Publix. The Triscuit-type crackers were $1.39 at Aldi. And the Ritz cost about $0.30 (also at Aldi) because I had eaten most of the package during the previous month of pregnancy. I was very proud of the platter even though I had to spend an extra 15 minutes cutting cheese cubes.
