This is where the internet comes in really handy. I have rarely liked artichokes and never had a desire to learn how to cook them. But Paul wanted one, and I gave him leeway to purchase and cook it himself. He trimmed the tips off of the artichoke and put in a spaghetti pot with enough water in the bottom to boil and steam the vegetable. He pulled each leaf off individually at the table and dipped in in lemon, salt, mayonnaise, butter or a mixture of them. He scrapped the leaves on his teeth as he slid each leaf out of his mouth and chewed on the meat from the underside. As with other fruits and veggies, the more he got to the center of the vegetable, the stronger and better the flavor of the artichoke became.
Out of lack of education, I served a simple lettuce and tomato sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries as the rest of the meal.
