For an all-girls mini party, I needed a simple mid-afternoon snack to be more of the main dish for a small group. I already had some crackers made of a variety of seeds--flax, poppy, sesame, etc. The crackers have a great and unique flavor. I simply wanted something to add to them. I then selected a plain, but well seasoned hummus and a medium salsa as dips. For aesthetic purposes, I sprinkled sweet paprika over the hummus and put both dips in matching bowls.
For open-faced sandsiches, I placed sliced muenster cheese on top of sliced Roma tomatoes and placed a large fresh sweet basil leaf from our herb bush/tree on top as a garnish. This is a common breakfast treat in Europe, and I wondered if it would be a success in America. The jury is still out.
I liked the simplicity of this buffett because there was just one base on which the items could go. That meant easy set up, easy display, and easy clean up. I would serve it again to the right crowd.
